What is the purpose of Voicethread?

VoiceThread is an interactive collaboration and sharing tool that enables users to add images, documents, and videos, and to which other users can add voice, text, audio file, or video comments. 

What makes this particular tool unique and useful for teachers is how easy it is to add audio commentary to images and documents and to add multiple commentaries to a single artifact.

How can it be used in the classroom?

Teachers can use this tool to introduce, teach, review concepts on any content areas while allowing students to give immediate feedback and comments to their teachers or peers.    This tool can be used for student presentations.

This tool provides ample opportunity for students’ participation and creativity.  It can turn passive learners into active participants and gives this a variety of ways to express themselves.  This can be used as a whole class, small group or independent activity.


 Advantage:
  • Web-based so no downloading of software required, runs in a variety of browsers and operating systems.
  • Supports multimedia – can embed video, power point presentation, pictures, or even student drawings using the doodling tool.
  • Minimal technology requirements – computer and internet access.
  • Easy to use
  • Allows users to show emotion (audio recording) behind comments and give listeners added context to decipher the meaning behind the words.
  • Had doodling tool – student can make their own drawings.
  • Gives five different ways to make commentaries
  • Improve a sense of community in the class.


Disadvantages:
  • Simultaneous access is not possible
  • Free access is limited
  • Doesn’t function uniformly across all browsers
  • Can be slow at times and unpredictable.

How to use Voicethread?

1.  First, you need to register and fill out the necessary information.


             

2.Immediately after you register, you to you’re “My Voice” tab.  You may begin to create your own multimedia presentation by clicking “Create” tab.  The following image will show.  You may upload your images, videos by using the tab on the side.


         

 3.  Once your presentation is uploaded, you may begin to put your comments. There are five different ways in which a person can leave a comment. First, there is the textual comment. Then, there are also different ways in which you can add a voice comment; the first is by using a microphone, and the second is by using a telephone. Following the use of a voice comment, there is the ability of implementing an audio file. Finally, there is the video comment which can be made with a webcam. An additional form of commenting is available, This is the "doodle" function which is a tool to draw on the presentation itself.

          


4.When your presentation is done, you have the option to share by sharing your link to your audience.

  1. Wow.. This is a professional job. Everything is in order and easy to flow along. I like the way you sum up the purpose and useful of Prezi and VoiceThread. I'm still having a problem creating the VoiceThread. Maybe we can all do one presentation using this tool.
